Railway Cooperation

It is expected that North Korea will expand its cooperation with China and Russia in the railroad industry.

Naenara, the portal site run by Pyongyang, introduced business cooperation between Hong Kong International Investment Corporation and Joseon International Railroad Passenger Joint Company on June 12. The latter, established in April 2012, is currently providing passenger train services between Pyongyang and Dandong, Beijing, and Shenyang.

The portal site also announced that the company was preparing more passenger trains to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, and Moscow, while setting up tourist information offices in the Tumen River and Rason regions. The railway tourism to North Korea is expected to get a new momentum in two years once the train operations between the North and China and Russia are increased.

The above-mentioned expansion in train service as of late can be attributed to China’s intention to revitalize the regional economy, North Korea’s desire to attract more tourists for greater foreign currency income, and Russia’s aim to expand its bilateral exchange with Pyongyang.
