RevuAhn Tech released a solid state drive (SSD) that is capable of boosting the speed of old PCs eight-fold. “Our new product, RevuAhn Drive XM, runs at a speed of 850 MB/s, and can reach 1,600 MB or 2,400 MB when two or three of them are placed in parallel,” a company representative explained. Hard disks in general have a speed of about 100 MB/s, and even the latest SSD is limited to around 250 MB/s when mounted on an old computer.
The secret of the RevuAhn Drive XM is that it uses PCI Express instead of serial advanced technology attachment (SATA). Specifically, SATA2 and SATA3 have a maximum speed of 250 MB and 500 MB each, but PCI-Express outperforms them with a speed of 1,000 MB/s (2.0 2X type). This is why the product can achieve maximum performance even in an old SATA2-based Mac Pro and other workstations. It can be applied to slim PCs because it can be accommodated in an LP case, too.
A TLC SSD’s speed decreases to one-third when the amount of accumulated data increases. However, the MLC SSD of RevuAhn Techn can maintain constant speed even after a long period of use. In an experiment, the Drive XM kept running at over 700 MB/s when a 10 GB file was copied, while the speed of a TLC SSD dropped to 140 MB when 5 GB or so was copied.
“The RevuAhn Drive X2, the super-performance SSD we released earlier for corporate customers, uses eight mSATA850 SSDs, but the Drive XM employs just two of them for a lower price,” said Ahn Hyeon-cheol, CEO of the company, adding, “The capacity can be increased after the purchase, which will be a very attractive feature for price-sensitive customers.”
