LG G Pro 2

LG Electronics has unveiled the new LG G Pro 2, the successor to its G Pro. The smartphone has been released in the Korean market and will also be available for the rest of the world to gaze at in envy at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona in 11 days.

The model has a gigantic 5.9-inch Full HD IPS display at 1080x1920 pixels. That is the same resolution as an average 17” desktop monitor.  IT also comes with a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 2.1 megapixel front camera. The rear camera takes full HD video in addition to pictures. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with 3 gigs of DDR3 RAM. It has either 16 gigs or 32 gigs of eMMC memory and a microSD slot. It also runs on the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat. All of these specs would sound good in a notebook computer.

But one of the coolest new features is that the phone can be unlocked and even powered on by knocking on the screen in a specific cadence. This new type of security system has previously only been seen as a paid app on the Apple iPhone.

The company’s press release touts, “The G Pro 2 is the first LG smartphone to benefit from an enhanced 13MP camera with OIS+ (Optical Image Stabilizer Plus) and advanced functions ideal for creating sharing content. LG's proprietary OIS+ technology adds software anti-shake functionality to the acclaimed hardware-based feature already built into the slim camera module for the best photos and videos possible when in motion or in low light situations. What's more, the sensors and lens of the rear and front camera on the G Pro 2 have increased in both size and sensitivity, for images that rival many standalone point-and-shoot cameras.”

Finally, you can get the device in white, silver, or black. No word yet on price or when the device will be available outside of Korea. It’s good to live in Seoul.
