Samsung C&T announced on November 23 that it clinched the deal for the second phase of the WestConnex project, which is the largest transport project in the history of Australia launched by the New South Wales government.
The second phase is expected to cost US$2.8 billion and Samsung C&T won it by forming a consortium with Leigton and Dragados, two leading construction companies in Australia and Spain. Samsung C&T and Leigton had formed a consortium with each other and won the first phase, too. Samsung C&T could win the contracts in a row based on its solid partnership with local companies and its excellent outcome for the Roy Hill Project in Australia, the purpose of which is to develop iron mines at an investment of US$5.6 billion.
In the meantime, Samsung C&T is aiming to win the third phase of the project as well. Furthermore, it is planning to participate in more transport infrastructure construction projects in Australia, including those for subway construction in Sydney and Melbourne, which are estimated to cost US$20 billion in total on an annual average basis.
