SK Telecom and Nokia jointly opened a research center in the Seoul office of Nokia located in Gangnam, southern Seoul, on June 29.
The two companies will accelerate joint research and developments of the core 5G networking technologies such as for Gbps level data transmission and cloud-based virtualized base station using the facilities in the new Nokia Korea office building.
Based on the results from the joint R&D activities, the two companies will establish a 5G test bed at SK’s R&D Center in Bundang to verify and demonstrate the 5G technologies within the year.
It is the first time a global network equipment supplier has teamed up with a local mobile carrier to open an independent research center for 5G technology.
The two companies also has come to put a stepping stone to advance the commercialization of 5G technologies by succeeding in demonstrating the function of a distributed network technology optimized for high quality, high capacity data transmissions in the headquarters of Nokia in Finland on June 29 (local time).
The establishment of the research center comes five months after chief technology officers at SK Telecom and Nokia agreed to collaborate for testing and verifying 5G technologies at Nokia's headquarters in Finland, January this year.
