Smartphones and smart watches are supposed to be complementary, but when new models of each come out on the same day, consumers quickly realize that they only have so much money to spend on new gadgets per month. This is the case with the Galaxy S6 and Apple's new Watch, which find themselves competing for tech-savvy and impatient consumers' attention and money. And while there are no definitive numbers yet about which are winning, the Galaxy S6 seems to be getting more attention online.
Google Trends is a free service offered by the search giant to compare the relative amount of interest in search terms over a period of time. In the chart above, it can be seen that the Apple Watch started its hype early and strong back in Sept. 2014. On a mouseover, the “G” indicates that the spike in interest was caused by a articles about the new iPhone 6 and Apple Watch, since they were revealed together.
But after that intial spike of interest, the Galaxy S6 hype team hit with a one-two punch. First, S6 specs were released by CNET near the beginning of Dec. 2014 as indicated by the “F” on the chart. Then, the first rumors of the Galaxy S6 Edge having two curved edges bring the hype up more, which is indicated by “E.”
Both PR teams kick things into high gear in March. The first week of the month, the Galaxy S6 is compared to the Galaxy Note 4 (D). In the third week of the month, Apple officially unveiled the Apple Watch (C). It can be easily seen that the Galaxy S6 gets more attention than the Apple Watch by that month.
And, it maintains it. The Galaxy S6 launch (B) and the Apple Watch launch (A) happen on the same day, but interest is already tapering off for the Apple Watch, and it wasn't even as high originally as the attention that the Galaxy S6 is getting, which just keeps growing.
