Largest Solar Plant in Japan

LS Industrial Systems (LS IS) has completed a 40 MW photovoltaic power plant in Mito City, Japan, in just 19 months. This is the largest solar power plant currently in operation in Japan.

LS IS announced that it has completed the construction of the Mito Newtown Mega Solar Park at Mito city of Ibaraki Prefecture, of which the company won the contract from Japan Renewable Energy (JRE) in 2013. It also said that it held the completion ceremony on Feb. 6 and started operations.

The JRE is an energy developer and operator that Goldman Sachs has set up in order to enter the new renewable energy market in Japan.

Construction on the Mito Newtown Mega Solar Park was started in July 2013, and has an area of 500,000 square meters. LS IS has made a supply contract worth 40 billion won (US$36.12 million) through its contractor, Kajima Corporation.

The company supplied solar power generation devices including 39,210kW or 156,840 solar cell modules, ring main units (RMU) and transformers, ending up with the largest solar farm in Japan with a power generation capacity of 30,000 kW.

Taking this project as a momentum, LS IS has proven its technical skills in the solar power generation market in Japan and also plans to accelerate advancement into the market with various solutions.

Jeon Jong-se, the Japanese headquarters president of LS Industrial Systems, said, “As LS IS has finished the first JRE project successfully, the company is getting much attention in the mega solar market based on power plants in Japan. Although the global solar industry is still stagnant, the company will increase its market share based on its specialized solutions. Also, the company will accelerate the market invasion in Japan with total solutions of not only solar power but also smart grids.”

As Japan’s solar industry magazine Pveye ranked the company third in its survey on solar power module quality in 2013, following SolarWorld of Germany, LS IS has proven its technology in modules.
