#1 PC Maker

Last year, the global PC market shrank by 10%. However, Chinese PC maker Lenovo became the top-ranked PC maker in the world by increasing in revenue.

Market research firm IDC announced on January 10 that Lenovo unseated Hewlett-Packard to become the world’s number one PC seller, with 53.771 million units in PC shipments, compared to HP’s 52.171 million. Lenovo’s market share grew from 15.0% in 2012 to 17.1% in 2013, whereas HP accounted for 16.6% of the total last year, just like 2012.

In the fourth quarter of last year, the global PC market shrank for 7 consecutive quarters, according to the latest numbers from market research firm IDC. PC shipments in 2013 were estimated to be 315.96 million units (Gartner’s numbers), or 314.55 million units (IDC’s figures). Despite a small difference in shipment volume, both estimates show a 10% year-on-year decline.

Among the top 5 PC makers, Lenovo was the only company that recorded an increase in sales last year. Its sales volume in 2013 shot up 2.7% from the previous year, while HP’s sales figures dipped 10.3% from a year ago. Dell was in third place with a sales contraction of 42.4% year-on-year, followed by Acer with a 28.5% year-on-year decrease, and ASUS with a 19.6% year-on-year drop in sales.

The world’s number 1 PC supplier is expanding its business to smartphones and tablets. According to Lenovo Korea, Lenovo’s Multimedia, Internet and Digital Home (MIDH) unit, which includes the smartphone, smart TV, and Tablet businesses, is strengthening its position in the market, as witnessed by the fact that the unit has represented 15% of the firm’s total revenues over the last two quarters.
