The Korea Internet Security Agency (KISA) and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning conducted a survey on Internet usage on mobile devices, mobile Internet services usage, and smartphone usage in June, and released the results on Dec. 29. According to the results, LTE-based mobile Internet connections accounted for 86.9 percent of the total mobile Internet usage to show a 24.4 percent increase from a year ago. A total of 6,000 mobile Web users age six or older participated in the survey.
The result also showed that the respondents spent an average of two hours and 51 minutes a day on their smart phones, which is approximately 38 minutes longer than a year earlier. The percentage of those spending at least three hours per day increased by 18.7 percentage points to 45.7 percent, while the rate of increase amounted to 22.5 and 23.0 percentage points for those in their 20s and 30s, respectively.
The average frequency of mobile Internet use was 12.8 times per day. Smart phone-based use was 12.7 times to show a higher frequency than connection via other types of devices such as tablet PCs.
Ninety-nine percent of the respondents answered that they used the mobile Internet for information search and Web surfing, followed by messenger and SNS communication (97.5 percent) and pastimes (89.1 percent) like games, videos, and music.
