Labor Issue Inspection

The Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly nominated 19 CEOs, including Yoon Gap-han, CEO at Hyundai-Kia Motor Group, Labor Relations, and Ha Seok-ju, Vice President at Lotte E&C, Safety Division, as witnesses of the parliamentary Inspection on October 16.

CEO Yoon will probably be required to answer questions related to shifting temporary employees to permanent positions, as the court recently decided, “the status of employees of Hyundai Motor’s subcontractors has to be respected, and these employees have rights to claim employment.”

The court admitted the permanent employment of temporary employees of Kia Motors last month, following the same decision on those of Hyundai Motor. However, Hyundai Motor announced, “Regarding the court’s decision, we decided to appeal.”

Vice President Ha will be interrogated regarding the sinkholes around the construction site of the Second Lotte World and his follow-up plans to guarantee safety of residents. Lotte World Mall, the biggest shopping complex in Korea, was partially opened on Oct. 14 with traffic chaos. Even though the city of Seoul granted Lotte World Mall a temporary permission to open, safety and traffic problems are still very controversial.

Kim Joon-ho, president of SK Hynix, is to attend the ISA to testify about the outbreak of leukemia in its employees.

In addition, Yoon Moon-gyoon, vice president of Hyundai Heavy Industries Safety Division; Kim Young-seop, vice president of LG UPlus (Business Management Director); and Lim Kyung-taek, executive vice president of Daewoo E&C, were summoned.
