Samsung Selects 45 Projects to Develop Future Technologies for Second Half

Samsung announced on Oct. 9 that it chose 45 projects to foster future techs for the second half of this year through a strictly impartial judging process. Projects were selected in the basic science, materials technologies, and ICT creative project areas. 

As for basic science, 19 projects were selected, including a study on quantum processes and superstring theory by professor Lee Sang-min from Seoul National University, a project that explores a next-gen nuclear reactor neutrino by professor Kim Soo-bong from Seoul National University, and a study on the eigenvalue spreads of random Schrödinger operators by professor Lee Ji-woon from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). 

Fourteen projects were chosen in the materials technologies field, including a project to develop a photoelectrode that can dissolve water using sunlight by professor Jang Ho-won from Seoul National University, and research on micro-polymer actuators by professor Park Moon-jung from the Pohang University of Science and Technology.

When it comes to creative ICT projects, 12 cases were selected, including a study on the development of a new memory platform to realize the Internet of Things (IoT) by professor Roh Sam-hyuk from Hongik University, and research on new MEMS packages by professor Yoon Joon-bo from KAIST. 

The 10-year project aimed at nurturing future technologies funded by Samsung with a 1.5 trillion won (US$1.39 billion) investment started in August 2013, and 121 projects have already been selected so far, including 111 general projects and 10 designated projects.
