New Traditional Music Hall

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on December 23 that it will build a music hall specifically dedicated to performing Korean traditional music at a site across from Donhwamun (the Donghwa Gate) at Changdeokgung (Changdeok Palace).

Encompassing 1,800 square meters and three stories high with three more underground floors, the concert hall will consist of an indoor auditorium and outdoor area for concert performances. It will be built using traditional Korean architecture, modeled in the style that is characteristic of Changdeokgung’s historic atmosphere. The total cost of the project is estimated to be 9.6 billion won (US$9 million). Construction, which began on December 17, will be completed in May 2015.

A city spokesperson said, “When the concert hall opens, concerts will be held regularly. It will be an enhancement to the Changdeokgung area, where tourists visiting the area will get to see and listen to the beauty of our national heritage.”
